the extra cool important shit

FALCON HEAVY LAUNCH!!1!

Rough Notes (things not to forget to mention)
  • Cool as hell
  • Side boosters landed simultaneously
  • Core booster crashed into the water at ~300 mph/500 kph about 100 m from the ASDS, and damaged 2 of its engines (ASDS = Autonomous Spaceport Drone Ship)
  • Elon’s 2009 red (uh, midnight cherry actually) Tesla Roadster is on track for a Mars flyby
    • People mistakenly were saying it was a 2018 model roadster which 1 does not exist (they're making one in 2020 tho) and 2 it was an 09 lol
  • The thing worked damn beautifully

Notes regarding stuff not necessarily FH (info taken from press conf.)
^ press conference q&a (not cringey, very informative)
  • Block 5 is gonna be the last version of Falcon 9/FH, it will be rolled out soon
  • Center core of FH has to take about ~1M lb of additional loads from the side cores
  • Elon estimated the total investment into FH at ~$500M, probably more
  • Falcon Heavy should have no problem getting national security missions given the number of launches already planned
  • BFR spaceship hover flights might come as early as next year (!!) similar to Grasshopper
  • Starman’s spacesuit is a production model (actually one of the qualification articles), but was not instrumented (although Elon said “you can just jump in a vacuum chamber with it and it’d be fine”); the spacesuit took about 3 years to design and make
  • Elon said “suggestions are welcome” for BFR’s dummy payload
  • Fairing recovery has proven surprisingly difficult - Elon thinks they can have it down in 6 mo; there is a special boat, like a catcher’s mitt (Elon said that they could use the same boat to catch Dragon lmao)
  • Now that FH/Falcon block 5 is done, the absolute priority is crew Dragon; the goal is to fly astronauts at the end of this year (ofc that is in Elon time)
  • The titanium grid fins were the most important thing recovered from the FH launch

Elon’s reaction to the launch (from behind the scenes footage)

Stuff about the car:
  • SpaceX has no plan to really track the Tesla - battery lasted about 12h after launch

Govsat-1 booster (probably) destroyed by USAF
  • Last week we discussed the Govsat-1 first stage booster that splashed down into the ocean and survived (unexpectedly)
  • Elon Musk confirmed on twitter that it was a test for a high retro thrust landing that could potentially be done on the drone ship
    • They decided to test it without the drone ship so there was no risk of ruining the boat
  • SpaceX did not expect the rocket to survive the test and most likely did not have a backup plan for if the booster did survive
  • Trusted anonymous sources confirmed that the US air force destroyed the booster via an airstrike (<-- the article says this is incorrect as of 2/9/18, SpaceX issued a statement denying USAF involvement and said that the rocket “broke apart”)
  • Article with correction ^
  • Elon did state on twitter that they would try to tow it back to land, however this could have been too dangerous for a couple of reasons:
    • Un-safed COPV’s (composite overwrapped pressure hvessels [basically a tank full of scary ass rocket chemicals wrapped in carbon fiber {hence the ‘composite’}])
    • These tanks at flight pressure (the state the tank is in while in flight) can be very dangerous to work with
    • Onboard electronics that control the pressure of the COPV’s could have been ruined by seawater upon splashdown making it impossible for the vehicle to safe its tanks

SpaceX launches Iridium-4 mission last night
  • SpaceX successfully launched and deployed 10 Iridium satellites for the Iridium 4 mission last night
  • The mission launched from SLC-4 at Vandenberg Air Force Base on the coast of California
  • The Falcon 9 first stage was an expendable core
    • The rocket had no landing legs and there was no drone ship waiting to catch it
    • The first stage was a reused stage
    • The interstage was still grey from its last flight and did have grid fins on it
  • The second stage carried the payload up to altitude in a polar orbit crossing over the south pole and coasted around the planet before doing a final orbital insertion burn just south of Madagascar.
  • All 10 Iridium spacecraft were deployed successfully
  • The spacecraft launched just after sundown and flew up into the sunlight making for an interesting display

UPS orders a bunch of Tesla semi trucks
  • UPS will be buying 125 Tesla electric semi trucks, the largest order so far
  • The Tesla truck is expected to go into production in 2019, and will cost about $200k each
  • Other orders have come in from Walmart, J.B. Hunt, and PepsiCo
  • With the inclusion of Tesla semis, UPS will be expanding its alternative-fuel fleet, which already includes electric and natural gas vehicles

Google Chrome is available to download on Windows Store
  • Google has added Google Chrome to the windows store in an interesting way
  • It is a packaged app for Windows 10 that opens itself up to the Chrome download page
  • This is funny because
    1. Edge sucks
    2. Google would never make a Chrome App for windows 10
  • This is because windows apps that use the internet have to use specific HTML and JavaScript codes for Windows 10 (which are basically codes that tell the browser how to make stuff look)
  • Chrome uses its own HTML and Java codes and for an app to be possible they would have to completely rebuild Chrome which would kinda be a pain in the ass

Disney to acquire 21st Century
  • The Walt Disney Company has reached a deal to buy most of 21st Century Fox’s properties, giving them the muscle to challenge Netflix, Apple, and Amazon
    • Not included in the acquisition: Fox News, the Fox broadcast network and the FS1 sports cable channel
  • Disney has already announced an ambitious plan to introduce two streaming services by 2019.
    • ESPN Plus, will arrive in the spring.
    • A second offering built around the Disney, Marvel, Lucasfilm and Pixar brands, will roll out late next year.
    • Disney will now also own a majority stake in Hulu, an established service that focuses on older viewers with programming that includes ABC shows.
      • Disney previously owned 3%. Comcast and Time Warner also have stakes
  • “This will allow us to greatly accelerate our direct-to-consumer strategy, which is our highest priority.”
  • Goodbye Cable TV: To augment ESPN Plus, Disney is adding 21st Century Fox’s chain of 22 regional cable networks dedicated to sports, including the YES Network, which carries New York Yankees games.
  • Disney is buying the Fox television studio, which has 36 series in production, including
    • “The Simpsons,”
    • “Homeland,”
    • “This Is Us”
    • “Modern Family.”

SpaceCast Notes 8/12/2017

SpaceCast - 8/12/2017

Links:

SpaceX to launch supercomputer to ISS

  • SpaceX will be delivering an HP Enterprise supercomputer to the international space station aboard the CRS 12 launch on August 14th
  • HPE is teaming with NASA and SpaceX to test how commercially available computers will work in space
  • This is important to ensure supercomputers can be operated in space for long periods of time such as on a mission to Mars
  • These tests will make sure the computer won't be affected by things like radiation, solar flares, unstable power supply, sub atomic particles, etc.
  • It is important that long duration/distance crews will be able to take this kind of equipment with them because of communication delays with earth
    • The idea is that mission critical calculations could be performed in real time on the ship rather than having something go wrong because the calculations couldn't be made on earth and sent back in time

Semi-Official: Here’s what the iPhone 8 looks like
  • The first dummy units of the iPhone 8 have been delivered
  • The display is nearly bezeless on all sides, but but does NOT have curved edges like the Samsung Galazy S8
  • The screen's clean look is disrupted by 'bezel island' where the camera, speaker, and other sensors are
  • it looks like elements from the phone's title bar will be placed in the nooks on either side of bezel island.
  • It has a glass back to support wireless charging. The sides are still metal in order to maintain a premium feel
  • It still has a camera bump on the back

Discord announces video chat and screensharing

  • Now friends on Discord can watch each other play their favorite games while talking face-to-face
  • “This is the most requested feature on Discord probably a year running,” says CMO Eros Resmini. “A lot of infrastructure had to be built up for this launch,”
  • The video features run at a smooth and crisp 720p at 30 frames per second. Skype runs at half that FPS
  • Only 5% of users will get video today, and it will only work with groups of up to 10 people
  • BUT one big thing that’s lacking at the moment is sound from screenshares

Scientists encode malware in DNA
  • A group of researchers from the University of Washington have demonstrated the possibility of encoding malicious software onto physical DNA
  • When gene-sequencing software analyses the data, it becomes a program that corrupts the software and takes control of the entire computer
  • At the moment, the attack is impractical for any spy or criminal, but it could become more common in the future as DNA sequencing continues to drop in price
  • Gene sequencing is often handled by university labs with potentially sensitive intellectual property on their networks
  • Hackers could infiltrate these networks, with possible applications including damaging criminal DNA testing or GMO products
